→The pus may extend:
• Posteriorly to involve ischiorectal fossa
• Anteriorly to the perineum to the labia in females and scrotum in males
• Anteriorly into a rectovaginal septum
• Laterally to the anterior abdominal wall, the vaginal vault, or medial part of the thigh
Rupture of the abscess into the lower part of the vagina can lead to a rectovaginal fistula.
